3HL Guelph Games set to go Saturday

GUELPH – Eight teams are to compete in the 3HL three-on-three pro hockey league’s 3HL Guelph Games Saturday at the Sleeman Centre.

Teams to compete in the single-knockout event that is to start at 3 p.m. are the Guelph Brewers, Newmarket Saints, Simcoe County Clippers, Hamilton Tigers, Oshawa 88’s, London 3’s, Kitchener Lions and Milton Flyers.

The Brewers are to play London at 3:50 p.m.

Semifinals are set for 4:40 and 5 p.m. with the final to go at 5:30 p.m.

Games feature two seven-minute halves. The first half is straight time while the second half has stop time in only the final minute.

The Brewers enter the Guelph Games off a tournament win in the Remembrance Day Collingwood Classic where they edged the Newmarket Saints 2-1 in the final. The Brewers had earlier defeated the Niagara Rapids 4-2 and Oshawa 88’s 7-2.

The Brewers’ roster includes former Guelph Storm players Matt Kennedy who had 71 goals and 62 assists in 202 games with the Storm, Joe Underwood who had a goal and five assists in 78 games with the Storm and Tyler Doig who had 62 goals and 77 assists in 170 games with the Storm. All three were teammates with the Storm during the 2006-07 season.

Brett MacLean had three goals in Collingwood while Theo Peckham, Greg Virgo and Kennedy each had two and Chris Chappell, Kurtis Bartliff and Jeff MacDermind had one apiece.

At 3-0, the Brewers are the only undefeated team in the league that also held the 3HL Season Opener at London in October.

Hamilton is at 4-1 and followed by Newmarket and the Toronto Bees at 2-1, Milton and Oshawa at 1-1, London at 1-2, and Kitchener, Niagara and Markham Millionaires at 0-1 and Aurora Avalanche and Simcoe County at 0-2.

The league is to return to the Sleeman Centre April 21, 2018, for its final tournament of the season, the $25,000 3HL Champions Cup.
