Another 4-3 preseason shootout win for Storm
GUELPH – The Guelph Storm is getting practise at its shootout.
Monday afternoon, the Storm’s Alexi Toropchenko scored the only goal in a shootout as the Storm edged the Mississauga Steelheads 4-3 in OHL preseason play at the Sleeman Centre.
It was the Storm’s second consecutive shootout win over the Steelheads as they had prevailed in a shootout by the identical score Saturday night at Mississauga.
The game was a close one throughout. Mississauga opened the scoring with a power-play goal by Shaw Boomhower before the match was four minutes old.
The Storm pulled even six minutes later when Garrett McFadden tallied.
Boomhower restored Mississauga’s lead in the second before the Storm replied with goals by Isaac Ratcliffe and Givani Smith to put them up 3-2 at the end of the period.
That score stood until the final minute of regulation time when Owen Tippett netted the equalizer for the Steelheads with 3.6 seconds to go.
That set the stage for import draft pick Toropchenko’s shootout heroics.
Smith, Ryan Merkley, Cam Hillis, James McEwan and McFadden had assists for the Storm while Jacob Cascagnette had two assists for Mississauga and Cole Schwindt, Austin Osmanski, Thomas Harley and Ryan McLeod had one apiece.
The Storm outshot the Steelheads 41-31 with Anthony Popovich in net for the locals and Emanuel Vella tending goal for Mississauga.
The win lifts the Storm’s preseason mark to 2-1-0-0.
Next preseason game for the Storm is Sept. 14 when they’re to host the Hamilton Bulldogs at the Sleeman Centre. Game time is 7 p.m.
