Another gem from Javier as Royals clip London

GUELPH – Edwin Javier pitched another gem as the Guelph Royals kept their eyes on a fourth-place finish in the Intercounty Baseball League with a 5-2 victory over the third-place London Majors Saturday night at Hastings Stadium.

The win lifts the Royals to 13-19, good for sixth with four games to go in their regular season. The Hamilton Cardinals and Toronto Maple Leafs are tied for fourth at 14-18. London’s third at 17-13.

Javier held London to three hits in 7 1/3 innings, although he issued a season-high seven walks. He also struck out 14 to raise his league-leading total to 106. Nobody else has more than 70.

Yomar Concepcion relieved for the final 1 2/3 innings and picked up the save. He walked on and struck out two.

The Royals grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second inning and never trailed after that. Brendan Keys singled and went to second on a one-out single by Jeff MacLeod. Both scored when Ethan Mohan hit a two-out triple to left field.

Mohan knocked in Guelph’s next run with a two-out double in the fourth.

The other two runs came in the seventh as Josh Garton doubled and Christopher Procopio followed with his second homer of the season.

London collected single runs in the sixth and eighth innings. Cleveland Brownlee smacked a solo homer in the sixth for the first hit surrendered by Javier while Michael Ambrose hit a single with runners on first and third in the eighth.

Kyle Gormandy took the loss for London as he surrendered 12 hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out five. Owen Boon finished the game, striking out three of the four batters he faced. The other grounded out. No Guelph batter was walked.

Mohan led at the plate with a triple, double and single while Procopio hit a homer and a single. Liam Hicks and Adam Rossit each clubbed two singles while Garton hit a double and Keys and Darius Barlas each hit a single.

Brownlee smacked his homer for London while Chris McQueen and Ambrose each hit a single.

The Royals are to host the Burlington Herd (11-21) Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Hastings Stadium and the Royals have also rescheduled two of the three games they had rained out in the last week. They’re to play the Kitchener Panthers (22-10) at Kitchener’s Jack Couch Park Friday at 7:30 p.m. and host the league-leading Barrie Baycats (24-8) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Hastings Stadium.
