Another hosts rolls a seven on Storm

KITCHENER – The Guelph Storm yielded seven goals for the second consecutive night as they were downed 7-5 by the Kitchener Rangers in OHL play Friday night at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium.

The Storm had lost 7-4 to the London Knights in London Thursday night.

Friday, Kitchener scored the first four goals of the game on its way to the victory.

The Rangers led 2-0 at the end of the first period and 6-3 after the second. The Storm scored twice in the final four and a half minutes of the game to narrow the gap.

James McEwan led the Storm with three goals and an assist while Isaac Ratcliffe and Cam Hillis also scored. Dmitri Samorukov and Barret Kirwin each had two assists while Mason Primeau, Cedric Ralph, Alexey Toropchenko and Tag Bertuzzi had one apiece.

Adam Mascherin struck for two goals for Kitchener while Guelph native Connor Bunnaman scored his 12th of the season. Kole Sherwood, Jonathan Yantsis, Nick McHugh and Cole Carter also scored. Joseph Garreffa assisted on four of the goals while Logan Stanley had two assists and Sherwood, McHugh, Mike Petizian, Yantsis and Riley Damiani had one apiece.

Kitchener outshot the Storm 30-25 and both teams went 2-for-4 on their power plays.

Anthony Popovich started in net for the Storm, but was relieved by Nico Daws at 2:17 of the second period after yielding Kitchener’s third goal. Popovich faced 11 shots and Daws faced 19. Daws was charged with the loss.

Luke Richardson made 20 saves to pick up the win for the Rangers.

Kitchener leads the Midwest Division at 13-6-2-0 while the Storm is third at 10-9-0-2.

The Storm is to host the Sarnia Sting (17-4-1-0) Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre.
