Another runaway win for Gryphon hockey men

GUELPH – A quick flurry of goals late in the second period helped spark the Guelph Gryphons to an 8-4 victory over the Nipissing Lakers in OUA men’s hockey league play Saturday at the Gryphon Centre.

The Gryphs scored five goals in the period including four in a span of three minutes and 16 seconds to prevail on the 10th annual Hockey Day in Gryphonville celebration.

The hosts, who completed an undefeated November with the win, led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 7-2 after the second.

Trevor Morbeck, Scott Simmonds and Ryan Migliaccio each scored twice for the Gryphs while Todd Winder and Michael Stevens added single goals. Josh McFadden, Marc Stevens, J.P. Villeneuve and Patrick Kudla each had two assists while Seth Swenson, Cody Thompson, Simmonds, Michael Stevens, Andres Kopstals, Nick Boyer and Manny Gialedakis had one apiece.

Danny Desrochers, Erik Robichaud, Brett Hargrave and Brody Morris scored for Nipissing. Deverick Ottereyes, Matt Donnelly and Hargrave had two assists apiece while Colin Campbell and Guillaume Naud had one each.

The Gryphs outshot Nipissing 38-26 and went 1-for-6 on their power play while the Lakers went 2-for-6.

Jason Da Silva collected the win in net for Guelph while Brent Moran took the loss for Nipissing.

With the win, the league-high eighth in a row, the Gryphs move into a tie for first place in the West Division with the York Lions. The Gryphs are at 10-3-1 while York is at 10-4-1.

Nipissing is eighth in the East at 5-7-3.

The game was the final home game of 2017 for the Gryphs who’re to complete their pre-Christmas schedule on the road with two games next weekend. They’re to play the Toronto Varsity Blues (4-9-1) Friday at 7 p.m. and Windsor Lancers (5-5-4) Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
