Another three-goal lead gets away from Storm

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – Turns out for the Guelph Storm the hardest lead to protect is a three-goal lead.

Keeghan Howdeshell’s goal 48 seconds into overtime gave the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds a 4-3 win over the Storm in Ontario Hockey League play Friday night at the GFL Memorial Gardens.

It was the third time in four games the Storm had a game go into overtime after they held a 3-0 lead. They lost 5-4 to the Erie Otters Oct. 26 and beat the Greyhounds 4-3 Oct. 28. Earlier in the season they led the Saginaw Spirit 5-0 in a game they won 6-5 in OT.

Friday, the Storm led 2-0 at the end of the first period and scored midway through the second to extend their lead to three goals.

Sault Ste. Marie started its comeback with a goal later in the second before scoring twice in the final six minutes of regulation time, the tying goal coming with 40 seconds to go.

Liam Howell, Cam Hillis and Keegan Stevenson scored for the Storm while Ryan Merkley had two assists. Getting one assist apiece were Alexey Toropchenko, Owen Lalonde, Jack Henley and Cedric Ralph.

Howdeshell scored twice for the Greyhounds as he netted the tying and winning goals. Mac Hollowell and Ryan Roth also scored. Cole MacKay had two assists while Barrett Hayton, Holden Wale, Morgan Frost and Jordan Sambrook each had one assist.

Sault Ste. Marie outshot the Storm 29-22 and both teams had four power plays, the Storm scoring once with the manpower advantage and the Greyhounds being held scoreless.

Matthew Villalta picked up the win in OT in net for the Greyhounds while Anthony Popovich was charged with the loss in the Storm net.

The Storm remains atop the Midwest Division at 9-4-3-0 while the Greyhounds lead the West Division at 12-3-3-0.

The Storm is to play the Saginaw Spirit (7-5-1-1) at Saginaw’s Dow Event Center Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
