Ashlan Best grabs two medals at Pan Am U20s

TRUJILLO, Peru – Guelph native Ashlan Best claimed a pair of medals, including a gold, Saturday at the Pan American U20 Track and Field Championships.

Best was first across the line in the women’s 200 metres, winning in a time of 23.27 seconds.

She was followed by the U.S. pair of Symone Mason in second at 23.42 and Gabriele Cunningham in third at 23.60.

Best had posted the fastest time in the qualifying heats of 23.71 earlier in the day.

About an hour after winning gold in the 200m, Best and Speed River Track and Field Club teammate Shyvonne Roxborough helped Canada win bronze in the women’s 4x100m relay. Roxborough started while Best ran the second leg, Eunice Boateng the third leg and Keira Galloway the anchor leg.

Canada finished third with a time of 45.14 seconds while the U.S. won at 44.07 and Jamaica was second at 44.92.

Laura Dickinson, who is to attend the University of Guelph and compete for the Gryphons in cross country and track and field, won the women’s 5,000m.

Dickinson finished with a time of 16:39.50 while Maria Ruiz Acuña of Mexico was second at 16:41.01 and Samantha Drop of the U.S. was third at 16:44.01.
