Baseball Gryphons finish first weekend tied for second

SUDBURY – The Guelph Gryphons swept a doubleheader from the Laurentian Voyageurs Sunday at the Terry Fox Sports Complex to finish their opening weekend in the OUA baseball league’s regular season with three wins and a loss.

Sunday, the Gryphs defeated Laurentian 8-6 in the first game and 7-0 in the second game.

That followed a split with the Ryerson Rams Saturday at the Audley Sportsplex in Ajax. The Gryphs took the opening game 8-2, but lost the nightcap 11-3.

The Gryphs are in a three-way tie for second in the league standings as the McMaster Marauders and Laurier Golden Hawks are also at 3-1. Western Mustangs lead at 4-0 after sweeping doubleheaders from Laurentian Saturday and Ryerson Sunday.

Next up on the schedule for the Gryphs are a pair of doubleheaders at Hastings Stadium. They’re to play Laurier Saturday and the Waterloo Warriors (0-4) Sunday. First games both days are to start at 12 p.m.
