Bears burst out of blocks to record first win of season

GUELPH – The Orangeville Bears got off to a fast start and they rode it to their first victory of the District 10 high school senior boys’ basketball season Thursday as they slipped by the Lourdes Crusaders 69-65.

The Bears scored the first nine points of the game and led 27-12 at the end of the first quarter. Orangeville was ahead 42-30 at halftime before Lourdes rallied in the second half to tie it 52-52 at the end of the third quarter thanks to a last-second bucket.

Orangeville didn’t cave, though, and held off the Crusaders although Lourdes did score the first two baskets of the fourth quarter to grab their first lead of the game.

Rowan Steele led the Bears with 24 points while Jeriah Valladares had 23 and Bilraj Binepal and T.J. Walkinshaw added seven apiece.

Geeth Kenneth connected for 18 points, all on three-pointers, for Lourdes while David Mokonen had 16, Abraham Kayeye 12 and Kevin Martinez nine.

Both teams had their long-range shots working as they combined for 18 successful three-pointers in the game – 12 by Lourdes.

 

Centennial 68 Ross 58

Cameron Powell hit for 22 points for Centennial while Hadi El-Miari had 13.

Sebastian Preizzolo-Furminger led Ross with 18 and Riley Price netted 11.

 

Guelph CVI 66 Bishop Macdonell 53

Noah Guthrie struck for 18 points for GCVI while Cameron Saunders had 16 and Rylan Ninaber followed with 15.

Matt MacEachern netted 12 for Bishop Mac and C. Brown had 11 and Kobi Griffin-Randall contributed 10.

 

Junior

Guelph CVI 53 Bishop Macdonell 45

Jackson Hayes collected 17 points for GCVI while Leo Szabo had 10 and Jesse Bauman added eight.

W. Glaspell’s 14 points led Bishop Mac while Nick Poloniato chipped in with 10.

 

Lourdes 79 Orangeville 40

Alex Basciano connected for 32 points for Lourdes while Tyler Blais followed with 24.

Cole Purdell-Lewis had 18 for Orangeville.

 

Centennial 78 Ross 75

Ross received 19 points from Dominic Vanos, 14 from Carter Wesley and 10 from Daniel Wang.
