Bishop Mac baseball boys grab first-round bye

GUELPH – The Bishop Macdonell Celtics clinched a first-place finish in the District 4/10 high schools baseball league Tuesday by blanking the St. James Lions 5-0.

Bishop Mac finished atop the league at 5-0-1 while St. James placed second at 3-2-1. The Lions were followed by the Ross Royals at 3-3-0 while the Centre Dufferin Royals of Shelburne, Guelph CVI Green Gaels and Centennial Spartans tied for fourth with identical 2-3-1 records. Lourdes Crusaders finished seventh at 1-4-1.

By finishing first, the Celtics get a bye in Thursday’s opening round of the playoffs and they’re to host a semifinal Monday.

Thursday’s opening round – or quarter-finals — feature Lourdes against St. James at Pearson Park, Centennial against Ross at Hastings Stadium and GCVI against Centre Dufferin at Orangeville’s Princess of Wales Park. All have 3:30 p.m. starting times.

Jacob McWhirter hit a double and single for Bishop Mac while Adam Perry hit a triple. Matthew Bracnik, Craig Boudreau and Hayden Wesseling each hit single and each had an RBI. Wesseling and Alex Vanderberg shared time on the mound to get the shutout.

Noah Graham hit a double for St. James while Nick Bombino, Nick Lo Stracco, Nate Maw and Noah Campagnolo also had one hit apiece. Campagnolo pitched four innings and yielded three runs while Lo Stracco gave up two runs in the final three innings.

The Crusaders picked up their first win of the season in their final game of the regular season.
