Bishop Mac Celtics into AA quarter-finals

HUNTSVILLE – The Bishop Macdonell Celtics of Guelph gained a berth in the OFSAA provincial high schools girls AA basketball championship tournament’s quarter-finals with a 57-42 victory over the Nelson Lords Friday.

The Celtics are seeded third in the 18-team tournament while Nelson is seeded 14th.

Bishop Mac grabbed the lead in the first quarter as they were up 14-9 at the end of the opening quarter and 29-24 at halftime. The Celtics stretched their lead to 45-30 by the end of the third quarter.

Grace Drewry led the Celtics with 15 points while Christina Stratford had 11 for Nelson.

With the win Bishop Mac advances to play six-seed Dundas Valley Gryphons in the quarter-finals Friday at 7 p.m.

Dundas Valley defeated 12th-seed Sacred Heart Crusaders of Newmarket 65-26 in the second round Friday and 16th-seed Holy Trinity Titans of Courtice 55-12 in the first round Thursday.

Semifinals and medal games are to be played Saturday with the semifinals to go at 11 a.m., bronze-medal game at 4 p.m. and gold-medal game at 5:45 p.m.
