Bishop Mac, Centennial post playoff surprises
ORANGEVILLE – The Bishop Macdonell Celtics surprised the Westside Thunder Tuesday to grab a berth in the District 4/10 high school boys’ hockey league’s quarter-finals.
The Celtics edged Westside 5-4 at the Alder Street arena in the opening round of the playoffs.
Bishop Mac had finished 10th in the 10-team league at 1-8-1-0 while Westside was seventh at 4-5-1-0. Westside had thumped Bishop Mac 12-0 Nov. 16 in their only regular-season meeting.
The Celtics received a goal and two assists from Ian Alexander and single goals from Neil Bilton and Jamie Martin also scored. Scorer of the other two goals was unavailable.
Liam Raymond, Regan Hasson, Andrew Reynolds and Tony Traetto scored once each for Westside.
The Celtics will make another trip to Orangeville Thursday to play the first-place Orangeville Bears at the Tonto Rose arena at 1 p.m.
Centennial 4 Norwell 2
The Centennial Spartans grabbed a berth in the quarter-finals with the victory over the Norwell Varsity Reds Tuesday at the Palmerston arena.
Cooper Page hit for a pair of goals for the Spartans while Brodey Hlushko and Zach St. Armand also scored. Zach Goodchild, Jake Neamtu and Parker Varnal each had one assist.
Jordan Allen and Joel Pellikka collected a goal apiece for the Varsity Reds while Ryan Litt and Cole Cherrey had assists.
Centennial had finished ninth in the 10-team league at 2-8-0-0 while Norwell was eighth at 2-7-1-0.
With the win, Centennial advances to Thursday’s quarter-finals and are to play the second-place Centre Wellington Falcons at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex at 3 p.m.
