Braves open junior A season with win over Barrie

KITCHENER – The Kitchener-Waterloo Braves opened their Ontario junior A lacrosse league season with a 9-6 victory over the Barrie Lakeshores Thursday at Kinsmen Arena.

The Braves led 4-0 at the end of the first period and 7-2 after the second. K-W led 6-0 before Brenden Welsh scored on a power play for Barrie with 1:28 to go in the second period.

Dean Sealey and Trent DiCiccio scored twice each for K-W while Spencer Pyke, Tye Kurtz, Jackson Reid, Dawson Bolger and Mason Noble added single goals. Kurtz had four assists and Reid and Pyke had two each and Devyn Orpana, DiCiccio, Sealey, John Nay, Cody Hamley and Bolger had one each.

Carson Moyer netted two goals for Barrie while single goals were netted by Brenden Welsh, Cameron Acchione, Jakob Power and Tanner Poole. Power, Welsh, Devlin Kauffeldt and Acchione each had two assists and John Buchan, Moyer and goalie Ethan Woods had one each.

Kitchener went 1-for-3 on its power play while Barrie went 1-for-8.

Steve Orleman collected the win in net for K-W and Woods took the loss for Barrie.

The Braves were whistled for 43 minute on 13 penalties while Barrie was called for 22 minutes on eight penalties.

Next up for the Braves is a game against the Peterborough Lakers May 20 at Kinsmen Arena.
