Canadian girls win Commonwealth silver in rugby

NASSAU, Bahamas — Aliesha Lewis of the Guelph Redcoats was a member of the Canadian team that won a silver medal in girls’ sevens rugby Friday at the Commonwealth Youth Games.

The Canadians were defeated 31-5 by Australia in the gold-medal match at the Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre.

Canada had gained its berth in the final by going 5-1 in the preliminary round.

Wednesday, the Canadians defeated Wales 33-10, Fiji 40-7 and Bermuda 64-0. Thursday, Canada blanked Trinidad and Tobago 31-0 and lost 24-17 to Australia.
