Canadian lacrosse women win World Cup opener
SURREY, England – Dana Dobbie of Fergus scored four consecutive goals including the game-winner as Canada opened the FIL Rathbones Women’s Lacrosse World Cup with a 9-5 victory over Australia Thursday.
The teams were tied 4-4 at the end of the first half and 5-5 four minutes into the second half before Dobbie went on her scoring spree.
Erica Evans of Peterborough had two goals and two assists for Canada while Alie Jimerson of Irving, N.Y., also scored twice and Crysti Foote of Mimico added the other goal.
Ashtyn Hiron and Rebecca Lane had two goals apiece for Australia while Abbue Burgess also scored.
Katie Donohoe of Peterborough faced 11 shots in the Canadian net while her teammates took 16 on the Australian net guarded by Elizabeth Hinkes.
In other games in Pool A, The United States defeated Scotland 19-3 and England doubled Wales 12-6.
Canada is to play Wales Friday, Scotland Saturday, U.S. Saturday and England Tuesday to wrap up pool play. Quarter-finals are set for Wednesday, semifinals Thursday and medal games July 22.
