Canes clip Kitchener to halt road losing streak

KITCHENER – The Guelph Hurricanes rode a pair of first-period goals to put an end to their road losing streak as they slipped by the Kitchener Dutchmen in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League play Sunday at Kitchener’s Memorial Auditorium.

The Canes scored two goals in a span of three minutes and 48 seconds before the game was 11 minutes old. They surrendered a goal in the opening minute of the second, but that was it as they scored their first victory away from Guelph since beating the Elmira Sugar Kings 3-2 at Elmira Sept. 24. There were 16 losses between the two wins, two of the losses coming in overtime.

Anthony Mota and Bradley Smith scored the goals for the Canes while Matthew Chard, Brett Hunter, Niki Molson and Payton McLeish each had an assist.

Tyler Harrison had an unassisted goal for Kitchener.

Jet Greaves collected the win in net for the Canes, his first since Dec. 23 and eighth of a season he started with three consecutive shutouts and five straight wins. Greaves made 30 saves while losing netminder Lucas Pfeil made 19 saves.

The Canes, who were outshot 26-11 after the first period, went 1-for-6 on their power play while the Dutchmen were scoreless on seven power plays.

The win leaves the Canes at 10-24-1-5 and in a tie for sixth in the Midwestern Conference with the Brantford 99ers who are at 11-23-1-3 and have two games in hand on the Canes. Guelph and Brantford are a point ahead of the Brampton Warriors (12-27-1-0) and they’re to clash Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre in a game postponed Jan. 12.
