Canes clipped by Kitchener Dutchmen

KITCHENER – A pair of first-period goals sparked the Kitchener Dutchmen to a 4-1 victory over the Guelph Hurricanes in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League play Sunday night at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium.

It was the eighth consecutive loss for the Canes and 16th in 17 games. Of those losses, three were in overtime including two of the last eight.

Kitchener led 2-0 after the first period and the second was scoreless. The hosts added another goal seven minutes into the third before Keanan Stewart scored for the Canes on a power play with 6:16 to go in the third. Anthony Mota and Bradley Smith assisted on the goal.

The Dutchmen completed the scoring with an empty-netter with five seconds to go.

Ben Demoe, Yurii Potsiluienko, Sam Shaw and Adam Pys scored the goals for Kitchener while Liam Hurley had two assists and Shaw, Austin Gaboury and goaltender Lucas Pfeil had one apiece.

The Canes outshot Kitchener 34-26 and went 1-for-7 on their power play while holding Kitchener scoreless on four power plays.

Jet Greaves was in net for the Canes while Pfeil had the win in net for Kitchener.

The Canes had 18 players dressed for the game.

The result leaves the Canes at 7-16-1-4 and Kitchener at 10-16-0-2.

Sunday, the Canes added Bill Wallace as their general manager, replacing Steve Marshall and Mike Down. Marshall was the general manager and Down was the director of hockey operations. Wallace is the father of Canes’ head coach Adam Wallace and the two have worked together in the same positions with the junior C Woodstock Navy Vets for two seasons – 2014-15 and ’15-16.

The Canes are to play the Brantford 99ers (8-18-0-1) at Brantford’s Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
