Canes clobbered as Listowel takes playoff match

LISTOWEL – The Guelph Hurricanes are a loss away from the end of their Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League season after they were dropped 11-4 by the Listowel Cyclones Tuesday night at the Steve Kerr Memorial Arena.

It was Listowel’s third win in as many games in the best-of-seven Midwestern Conference quarter-final playoff series between the teams. Listowel had taken the opener 7-0 Friday at Listowel and the second game 3-0 at the Sleeman Centre Saturday.

Tuesday, Listowel led 4-0 at the end of the first period and 8-1 after the second. Connor LePage’s power-play goal at 12:31 of the second, the final goal of the period, was Guelph’s first goal of the series.

Mathieu Mercier, LePage, Steven DeGroot and Niki Molson had a goal apiece for the Canes while Mercier also had two assists. Getting one assist each were Keanan Stewart, LePage, Matthew Chard, Brett Hunter and Ryan George.

Jakob Lee struck for three goals and two assists for Listowel. Caleb Warren scored twice while single goals were netted by Brady Anderson, Tommy Hoogars, Chayse Herrfort, Holdyn Lansink, Steven Grant and Brett Primeau. Bryce McFadden had three assists while Primeau, Ben VanOoteghem, Herrfort, Lansink, Grant and Blake Nichol had two apiece and Anderson had one.

Listowel outshot the Canes 39-28 and went 4-for-8 on its power play while the Canes went 2-for-6.

Trenton McGrail took the loss in the Guelph net as he allowed eight goals on 32 shots. Jet Greaves played just over 10 minutes in net for the Canes and he yielded three goals on seven shots. Evan Reinhart claimed the win in the Listowel net as he stopped 24 shots.

The game featured 134 minutes in penalties, 70 to Listowel. However, those totals included nine misconducts.

Fourth game of the series is set for Thursday at the Sleeman Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Listowel finished atop the conference with a 43-5-0-2 record and had 56 more points than the eighth-place Canes (12-30-1-7).

The Canes and Cyclones met seven times during the regular season and Listowel won six of those games. Guelph won 3-2 at the Sleeman Centre Sept. 21 before Listowel won six consecutive meetings between the teams by scores of 6-0, 4-0, 5-2, 4-1 twice and 4-3.

The Cyclones have won 11 of 13 games they’ve played in their new arena and both losses were in overtime.

The Canes have lost 11 consecutive playoff games since edging the Elmira Sugar Kings 2-1 in overtime March 5, 2016. The last time the Guelph squad won a playoff series was 2011 when they swept the Waterloo Siskins in the conference quarter-finals. They’ve lost six consecutive series since then and didn’t qualify for the 2013 playoffs.
