Canes downed by Brantford, fall to seventh in conference

GUELPH – Four goals in the second period sparked the Brantford 99ers to a 5-3 victory over the Guelph Hurricanes in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League play Saturday night at the Sleeman Centre.

Brantford led 4-1 at the end of the second period after the first had been a scoreless affair.

The 99ers added a power-play goal in the opening minute of the third before the Canes hit for two goals to close the gap.

Payton McLeish, Matthew Tolton and Anthony Mota scored for the Canes while assists were awarded to Connor LePage, Niki Molson, Mason Sinkeldam, Tolton and Brett Hunter.

Graydon James hit for a pair of goals for Brantfod while single goals were netted by Hunter Dubecki, Mitchell Devins-Cann and Jordan Stock. Christian Polillo and Jack Gaffney each had two assists while Devins-Cann, Dubecki, T.J. Hughes, Max Racicot and Louis Latta each had one assist.

The Canes outshot Brantford 30-29 and went 1-for-5 on the power play while the 99ers went 2-for-3.

Jet Greaves was tagged with the loss in net for the Canes while Mat Woroniuk collected the win for the 99ers.

The 99ers (12-24-1-4) vault over the Canes (11-26-1-5) and into sixth place in the Midwestern Conference with the win.

The Canes have seven games to go in their regular season. They’re to host the second-place Stratford Warriors (31-9-1-1) at the Sleeman Centre Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
