Canes downed by Stratford for ninth straight loss

GUELPH – The Guelph Hurricanes continue to idle in the drive to the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s playoffs.

Thursday night at the Sleeman Centre, the Canes suffered a 7-1 loss to the Stratford Warriors in a game that saw every goal scored in its second half. Stratford netted three of its goals in the final four minutes.

The loss was the ninth in a row for the Canes who have not won since dumping the Brampton Bombers 9-0 Jan. 21 at the Sleeman Centre. They’ve been outscored 48-15 since then, including 25-4 in their last four games.

However, the Canes can wrap up a playoff berth with a win over the Brantford 99ers Saturday night at the Sleeman Centre.

The Canes have four games to go in their regular season and can finish no higher than seventh in the Midwestern Conference. They can, though, finish as low as ninth.

Guelph’s at 13-30-2-1 and leads eighth-place Brampton (10-29-2-5) by two points and ninth-place Brantford (9-31-2-4) by five. While the Canes are 1-9-0-0 in their last 10, Brampton is 2-8-0-0 and Brantford is 4-5-0-1.

Thursday’s game was scoreless until Stratford’s Justin Graham tallied at 12:31 of the second period and the Warriors added two more goals later in the period.

Graham Evans scored for the Canes at 12:56 of the third. Alex Ritchie and Anthony Mota picked up assists.

Graham finished the game with two goals and two assists for Stratford while Jack Scanlan, Jack Wieringa, Keaton Ratcliffe, Hayden Broomhead and Kameron Shearer also scored for the Warriors.

Following their 7:30 p.m. game against Brantford Saturday, the Canes are to close out their regular season with games at Waterloo (25-16-1-4) Sunday at 1:30 p.m., at Brampton Feb. 24 at 8:30 p.m. and home to Listowel (34-7-1-2) Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m.
