Canes nipped by Siskins in second OT
GUELPH – Sam Cherry’s goal in the opening minute of the second overtime period handed the Waterloo Siskins a 4-3 victory over the Guelph Hurricanes in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League play Saturday night at the Sleeman Centre.
Cherry’s goal completed a comeback that saw the Siskins rally from a two-goal deficit early in the third period.
The Canes scored the only goal of the first period and led 2-1 after the second. They stretched that lead with a goal 36 seconds into the third period.
Bradley Smith, Anthony Mota and Zach Russell connected for a goal apiece for the Canes. Niki Molson assisted on two of the goals while single assists were awarded to Aiden Matekovic, Matthew Chard, Seamus Mooney and Mathieu Mercier.
Carter Tresoor, Zach Leonard and Alex Cimino scored the other goals for Waterloo while Tyler Dam assisted on three of the goals. Getting one assist apiece were Peter Cascagnette, Winston Cestnick, Cherry, Leonard and Matthew Prucha.
Waterloo outshot the Canes 40-31 and went 2-for-4 on its power plays while the Guelph squad went 0-for-2.
Jet Greaves stopped 36 shots in a losing cause for the Canes while Kailem Chappelle had 28 saves in the win for Waterloo.
The Canes (9-24-1-5) are tied with the Brampton Bombers (12-24-0-0) for seventh in the Midwestern Conference. Waterloo (21-13-1-3) is third.
Next game for the Canes is set for Jan. 28 when they’re to play the Kitchener Dutchmen (18-19-0-2) at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium. Game time is 4 p.m.
