Canes nipped by Stratford in double overtime

STRATFORD – Curtis Abbott’s goal at 3:08 of the second overtime period lifted the Stratford Warriors to a 3-2 victory over the Guelph Hurricanes in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League play Friday night at Allman Arena.

The Canes had scored the only goal of the first period before the teams scored once each in the second. A shorthanded goal by the hosts with 3:58 to go in regulation time forced the overtime.

Anthony Mota scored both goals for Guelph while Tyler Harrison assisted on both and Nathan George had one assist.

Callan Christner and Kaleb Pearson scored in regulation time for Stratford. Assists were awarded to Sean Chisholm, Mackenzie Aiken and Mitchell Casey.

Stratford outshot the Canes 40-30 and neither team recorded a power-play goal. The Canes had a manpower advantage five times and Stratford had seven power plays.

Ruan Badenhorst picked up the win in net for the Warriors while Jet Greaves took the loss for the Canes.

The result leaves the Canes at 6-3-1-2 and Stratford at 7-1-0-0.

Next action for the Canes is a home-and-home series with the Elmira Sugar Kings (5-5-0-0). They’re to play at the Sleeman Centre Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. and at Elmira’s Dan Snyder Memorial Arena Oct. 15 at 2 p.m.
