Canes suffer shutout loss to Listowel

GUELPH – The Guelph Hurricanes yielded three goals in the first period as they were blanked 4-0 by the Listowel Cyclones in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League play Saturday night at the Sleeman Centre.

Listowel scored its other goal in the second period and outshot the Canes 33-22.

Brady Anderson fired home a pair of goals for Listowel while Holdyn Lansink and Caleb Warren also scored. Cullen Mercer and Max Coyle each had two assists while Garrett Russell, Anderson, Keaton Willis and Chayse Herrfort had one apiece.

Both teams had seven power plays. The Cyclones scored on two of their power plays and held the Canes scoreless on their power plays.

Max Wright stopped 22 shots for the shutout. Trenton McGrail made 20 saves for the Canes until he was replaced by Jet Greaves at 5:31 of the third period after being given a game misconduct for a roughing major. Greaves made nine saves.

The game was the first home game for the Canes since they made some personnel changes. They picked up forwards Mooney from the Wellesley Applejacks of the Provincial Junior Hockey League and Myles Cook from the Elliot Lake Wildcats of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League and sent forwards Cameron Stokes to the Paris Mounties of the PJHL and Adel Zivojevic to the Walkerton Hawks of the PJHL.

It was the seventh consecutive loss for the Canes who had started the season with five wins and a tie in seven games. They’ve had one win, eight losses, one loss in overtime and a tie since then.

The Canes are to host the Stratford Warriors (13-2-0-0) twice in four days as they’re to battle Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre.
