Canes surrender four in third in loss to Elmira

ELMIRA – The Guelph Hurricanes will be playing for their playoff lives Tuesday when they host the Elmira Sugar Kings in their best-of-seven Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League Midwestern Conference quarter-final series after dropping Game 3 Sunday.

The Sugar Kings scored four consecutive goals in the third period to triple the Canes 6-2 and grab a 3-0 lead in the series.

Elmira led 2-1 at the end of the first period and the Canes tied it with the only goal of the second.

Ethan Skinner led the Elmira comeback with a natural hat trick – three consecutive goals. Mitch Hoelscher scored the other goal in the period.

Adel Zivojevic and Mitchell Morrison scored the goals for the Canes while Cameron Stokes, Morrison and Jaxon Camp each had one assist.

Jake Brown and Klayton Hoelscher scored the first-period goals for Elmira. Skinner, Brown and Jeff Jordan each had two assists.

The Canes outshot Elmira 34-31 and went 1-for-7 on the power play while the Sugar Kings went 1-for-6.

Jacob Hutchings took the loss in net for the Canes who have used a different goalie in each game. Nick Redman played the first game and Kristian Hufsky the second. Jonathan Reinhart picked up his third win of the series for Elmira.

Tuesday’s game is to start at 7:30 p.m.

If the Canes win that game, the fifth game is to be played at the Dan Snyder Memorial Arena in Elmira Wednesday starting at 7:30 p.m.
