Celtics cling to fourth in senior girls’ volleyball
GUELPH – The Bishop Macdonell Celtics held on to a fourth-place finish and a home game in the District 10 high school senior girls’ volleyball league’s quarter-finals with a 3-1 victory over the Orangeville Bears Thursday.
Bishop Mac won 25-12, 25-19, 20-25, 25-9.
The Celtics and St. James Lions finished the regular season tied for fourth with 8-6 records.
As the teams split their regular season matches, both winning 3-2 on the road, the tie had to be broken using the set scores in those matches and that went Bishop Mac’s way 202-194.
The teams are to meet in a quarter-final match Monday at 3:45 p.m. at Bishop Mac.
Guelph CVI Green Gaels finished atop the league at a perfect 14-0 and they were followed by the Centennial Spartans at 10-4, Ross Royals at 9-5, Bishop Mac, St. James, Lourdes Crusaders at 4-10, Centre Wellington Falcons at 3-11 and Orangeville Bears at 0-14.
Other quarter-finals Monday, all set for 4 p.m., feature GCVI hosting Orangeville, Centennial hosting Centre Wellington and Ross hosting Lourdes.

Ross 3 Centre Wellington 0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-11)
Guelph CVI 3 Centennial 0 (30-28, 25-20, 25-17)
Orangeville Bears and Guelph CVI Green Gaels also had to use a tie-breaker to decide the first-place finisher in the junior league after they both finished with 11-3 records.
The Bears and Gaels split their regular-season matches, both getting 3-1 wins on the road.
Orangeville was awarded first place as the Bears had 178 points in those two matches, three more than GCVI.
Junior quarter-finals are also to be played Monday.
