Celtics headed for medal game at OFSAA

HUNTSVILLE – The Bishop Macdonell Celtics of Guelph will play for a medal at the OFSAA provincial high schools girls’ AA basketball championship tournament Saturday.

The third-seed Celtics reached the semifinals of the tournament with a 51-41 victory over the sixth-seed Dundas Valley Gryphons of Dundas Friday night.

Bishop Mac jumped ahead early as the Celtics were up 18-10 at the end of the first quarter and 33-17 at halftime. They extended the lead to 46-27 by the end of the third quarter before Dundas Valley closed the gap a little in the final quarter.

Alicia Higgins led Bishop Mac with 10 points while Taylor Cumming had 18 for Dundas Valley.

Bishop Mac is to play second-seed Lo-Ellen Park Knights of Sudbury in the semifinals Saturday at 11 a.m. The winner will play in the gold-medal match at 5:45 p.m. while the loser will play in the bronze-medal match at 4 p.m.

Lo-Ellen Park defeated seventh-seed Stephen Leacock Lions of Scarborough 65-39 in the quarter-finals.

The other semifinal has top-seed Frontenac Falcons of Kingston playing fourth-seed Notre Dame Fighting Irish of Burlington.

In Friday’s other quarter-finals, Frontenac downed eighth-seed Cairine Wilson Wildcats of Ottawa 45-35 and Notre Dame needed overtime to get by fifth-seed Wallaceburg Tartans 66-57.
