Centre Dufferin, Erin claim basketball crowns

SHELBURNE – The defending champions lost their grips on the titles as the Centre Dufferin Royals hosted both District 4 high school boys’ basketball championship games Tuesday.

 

SENIOR

Centre Dufferin won took the title away from the two-time defending champion Westside Thunder with a 57-46 victory.

Dorian Jeffrey-Jones led the Royals with 17 points while Brandon Powell followed with 16.

Michael Horvath had 10 points for Westside and Jonathan Lyons added eight.

Centre Dufferin reclaimed the title it had last won in 2015.

The win also completed an undefeated run through the D4 season for the Royals who won all eight regular-season games and two playoff games.

Centre Dufferin advances to the CWOSSA AA championship tournament at Simcoe Friday and Saturday.

 

JUNIOR

The visiting Erin Raiders were victorious as they handed Centre Dufferin a 51-45 setback.

The win put an end to Centre Dufferin’s three-year grasp on the league title.

Ryan St. Denis hit for 23 points for Erin.

Thomas Moore had 15 for Centre Dufferin.

The two teams had tied for first place with 7-1 records and they had split their regular-season meetings, both winning at home. The Royals got to host the final as their win was by 11 points and Erin’s was by five.

The title win puts Erin in the CWOSSA AA championship tournament at Simcoe Friday and Saturday.
