Coyle rides Fortis Fortuna to win

ROCKWOOD – Daniel Coyle of Ireland guided Fortis Fortuna around the jump-off course in 36.887 seconds to claim victory in The Champions Sunday Classic presented by Kubota at Angelstone Tournaments’ main stadium.

A total of 13 horse/rider combinations, almost half the field, had fault-free rounds in the opening round. Of those, five went fault-free in the jump-off.

Finishing second was Itty Bitty/Kelly Soleau in 40.317 seconds. They were followed by Stand By Me/Jennifer Jones third in 42.198, Vittorio 8/Ian Millar fourth in 44.200 and Gaverdi Z/Juan Ortiz fifth in 44.886.

The feature event of the final day of The Champions meet attracted a field of 27.

The Champions is the first meet of Angelstone’s summer tour.

The National is set for this week and it features the $40,000 Open Welcome Thursday at 5:30 p.m., $86,000 National Grand Prix Saturday at 8 p.m. and $36,000 Sunday Classic at 11 a.m.

The International wraps up Angelstone’s summer tour and season. It’s scheduled to go Aug. 30 to Sept. 3.
