Creeks blanked to start elimination tourney

WHITBY – The Guelph Silvercreeks opened Baseball Ontario’s junior elimination tournament with a 5-0 loss to the Brampton Royals at Iroquois Park Friday.

The Creeks struggled at the plate in the loss. Details were not available.

Both the Creeks and Brampton compete in the COBA league where the Creeks have a 13-5-0 record and Brampton’s at 5-14-0. The teams met once during the season with Guelph winning 17-4 at Hastings Stadium May 17.

However, the Creeks entered the provincial tournament following three consecutive league losses in an eight-day period as they were defeated 7-3 by Burlington July 26, 10-4 by Port Dover Sunday and 4-3 by Stratford Nationals Tuesday.

The loss means the Creeks have to win the remainder of their games in the tournament to be crowned Ontario champions.

The Creeks are to play the St. Thomas Tomcats Saturday at noon at Oshawa’s Ritson Fields Park. St. Thomas lost 5-1 to the Windsor Selects in the opening round, but bounced back with a 9-2 win over the High Park Braves. The Creeks and Brampton received byes in the second round.

The tournament continues throughout the weekend with the final set for Monday afternoon at Oshawa’s Kinsmen Stadium.
