Crusaders get it together to top Bears in senior hoops

GUELPH – It took the Lourdes Crusaders until the second quarter to get their offence in gear and when they did they ran to an 83-48 victory over the Orangeville Bears in District 10 high school senior boys’ basketball play Monday at Lourdes.

The Bears led 17-15 at the end of the opening quarter before the Crusaders left them behind in the second quarter as Lourdes was up 46-26 at halftime. The gap grew to 66-30 by the end of the third quarter.

After a slow start to the season, the Crusaders are starting to get their offence going as they look ahead to the playoffs. They’re likely to be playing a quarter-final match on the road.

“It is improving,” Lourdes coach Jacy Leon said. “The guys are working hard every day. We just have to keep the faith that when playoffs come we’re going to be playing our best ball. That’s the goal, anyway.”

The Cusaders had 12 players suited up for the game against Orangeville and about half of them were members of last season’s D10 junior championship team coached by Leon.

“We’re young and we have a lot of learning still to do,” she said. “The guys are committed so we hope it all comes together in a couple of weeks.”

Geeth Kenneth and Will Vandenheuvel struck for 14 points apiece for Lourdes while Isaac Krueger had 12 and Josh Pallaya, Jacob Porcellato and Abraham Kayeye collected eight apiece.

Tyrell Asante had 12 points for Orangeville while Hassan Badran added 10, Charlie Hamilton gathered nine and Eric Wouters chipped in with seven.

The result leaves Lourdes at 3-7-0 and Orangeville at 1-8-0. Both have two games left this week before a two-week break for exams.

That break comes after two weeks of play following the break for Christmas.

“It’s hard to stay focused,” Leon said. “We’re planning on doing some stuff after their exams are finished just to kind of get back into it. It’s a grind for them and it’s a challenge for the players as they basically have to work on their own during that time. We’re fortunate that we have guys that really love the game and they want to play.”
