Cyclones hit in second period to top Canes

GUELPH – Three goals in the second period sparked the Midwestern Conference-leading Listowel Cyclones to a 4-3 victory over the Guelph Hurricanes in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League play Saturday night at the Sleeman Centre.

The Canes had scored the only goal of the first period before Listowel rallied for a 3-1 lead by the end of the second.

Mathieu Mercier scored twice for the Canes while Anthony Mota added the other goal. Assists went to Aiden Matekovic, Liam Buckley, Connor LePage, Niki Molson and Ben Demoe.

Listowel received goals from Cullen Mercer, 2015 Guelph Storm draft pick Jakob Lee, Guelph native Tommy Hoogars and Holdyn Lansink. Max Coyle and Chayse Herrfort each had two assists while Lansink, Ben VanOoteghem and Brett Primeau had one each.

The Cyclones outshot the Canes 39-21 and went 2-for-5 on their power play while the Canes went 2-for-8.

Evan Reinhart picked up the win in the Listowel net while call-up Tanner Wickware took the loss for the Canes.

Guelph is seventh in the eight-team conference at 12-28-1-6 and will finish either sixth, seventh or eighth. The Brantford 99ers are in sixth one point ahead of the Canes at 13-27-2-4 and the Brampton Bombers are eighth four points behind the Canes at 13-31-1-0.

The Cyclones are at 40-5-0-1 and have clinched a first-place finish.

The Canes have three games to go in their regular season. They’re to play the Elmira Sugar Kings (25-21-0-0) at Elmira Sunday at 2 p.m., play the Bombers at Brampton Friday at 7:30 p.m. and host the Stratford Warriors (35-10-1-1) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre in a potential playoff preview.
