CYO Knights bronzed in major bantam boys’ tournament

LONDON – Guelph CYO Knights Two claimed the bronze medal in their category of Basketball Ontario’s major bantam boys’ provincial championship Ontario Cup tournament on the weekend.

The team was the only local squad to win a medal during major bantam boys and bantam boys championship tournaments.

The Knights had a pair of wins in round-robin pool play in Division 13 as they dropped the Woodbridge Lions 70-29 and defeated South Simcoe 45-38 before being edged 60-55 by the Leamington Cougars. The locals won the bronze-medal match 56-49 over the Grimsby Grizzlies.

The Guelph Wesley Junior Gryphons finished eighth in Division 6. They dropped three pool-play matches as they were nipped 57-48 by St. Catharines CYO, 55-48 by North Toronto Three and 51-45 by Ottawa Shooting Stars. The locals were edged 51-47 by Toronto JCC in the seventh-place game.

Guelph CYO One placed seventh in Division 7. The Knights suffered three losses in pool play as they were defeated 57-46 by Durham City East, 61-45 by Kanata Saikaley and 59-44 by the Durham Gators KKO. They rebounded with a 46-40 victory over Team Breakdown B of Brampton/Mississauga in the seventh-place game.

The Guelph Randell Junior Gryphons were fifth in Division 15. They had a win and two losses in pool play as they beat Whitby Saints Ross 58-47, but lost 40-37 to Huntsville Hurricanes and 57-53 to Penetanguishene-Midland Magic. The locals downed Naismith of Lanark County 54-33 in the fifth-place match.

The Centre Wellington Celtics placed sixth in Division 16 as they were defeated 57-33 by Collingwood Two and 55-48 by Sudbury Jam in pool play and 61-46 by Durham/Kawartha Dragons in the fifth-place game.

 

Bantam Boys

The Guelph Vosper Junior Gryphons finished fourth in Division 4 at the Ontario Cup bantam boys tournament at Milton.

The Junior Gryphs rebounded from a 44-40 loss to the Pelham Panthers in their opening game of pool play with a 40-27 win over Stoney Creek and a 51-36 victory over the Niagara Rangers. The locals were defeated 50-43 by Cooksville CKATT in the bronze-medal match.

The Guelph VanKoughnett Junior Gryphons finished seventh in Division 8.

The Junior Gryphs suffered three losses in pool play as they were defeated 58-32 by Halton, 76-40 by York South and 66-47 by Toronto SBA. The locals rebounded with a 48-34 triumph over Markham Gators in the seventh-place game.

The Guelph Cawsey Junior Gryphons were fifth in Division 13.

The locals had a win and two losses in pool play as they beat the Grimsby Grizzlies 47-37, but lost 31-29 to East Gwillimbury and 54-47 to Cambridge Two. A 54-35 win over the Woodbridge Lions gave the Junior Gryphs fifth place.
