Davison powers Gryphon hockey women to victory

WINDSOR – Sydney Davison struck for four goals as she powered the Guelph Gryphons to a 6-3 win over the Windsor Lancers in OUA women’s hockey league play Saturday at the South Windsor Arena.

The victory was the third in a row for the Gryphs and their eighth in nine games in 2018. Three of those wins came in overtime. The win also clinched a playoff berth for Guelph.

Davison scored three times in the first period to spark the Gryphs to a 4-2 lead over the lowly Lancers, 13th in the 13-team league. Windsor cut the gap to a single goal with the only goal of the second before the Gryphs added their final two goals in the third.

Karli Shell and Emma Forcey scored the other goals for the Gryphs while Mallory Young and Cyan Roepcke each had two assists and Laura Crowdis, Miranda Lantz, Kristen Jay and Molly Crossman each had one assist.

Reagan Kaufman tallied twice for Windsor while Larissa Borowiec collected the other goal. Meredith Goldhawk, Sydney Dobbin and Amy Maitre each had one assist.

Aurore Beaulieu had 27 saves for the win in net for the Gryphs while Molly Jenkins was charged with the loss for Windsor. She had nine saves in the first period and was replaced by Morgan Farrow for the final two periods. Farrow made 19 saves.

The Gryphs scored on one of their two power plays while Windsor went 1-for-3 on its power play.

Guelph remains third in the league at 12-4-5-0 for 44 points. They’re four points behind the Queen’s Gaels (13-3-3-3) and one behind the second-place Western Mustangs (13-2-5-2). The Gryphs have a game in hand on both the Gaels and Mustangs.

Windsor’s at 2-1-17-2 and has been eliminated from the playoff race.

The Gryphs have three games to go until playoffs starting with a game against the sixth-place Nipissing Lakers (10-2-6-2) at North Bay Friday at 5 p.m.
