Eagles prevail in senior basketball semifinal

FERGUS – The Emmanuel Christian Eagles continued down the path that they hope leads to their first ever District 4 high schools basketball title Monday.

The Eagles dropped the Centre Dufferin Royals 62-38 in a senior girls’ league semifinal to gain a berth in next Monday’s championship match.

Scoring details were not reported.

The Eagles will play the winner of Wednesday’s 4 p.m. semifinal between the defending champion Wellington Heights Wolverines and the Norwell Varsity Reds.

If Wellington Heights wins that game, the Wolverines will host the final. If Norwell wins the semifinal, Emmanuel Christian will host the final.

Wellington Heights and Emmanuel Christian tied for top spot in the six-team league with 9-1 records. The Wolverines won the tiebreaker by a single point as they defeated the Eagles by 12 points (35-23) at Fergus Oct. 4 and the Eagles beat the Wolverines by 11 points (39-28) at Mount Forest 19 days later.

Wellington Heights has won the league title three times in the past five years.

The junior semifinals are set for Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. Centre Dufferin is to host the Westside Thunder of Orangeville in Shelburne while Wellington Heights is to host the Erin Raiders.

The junior final is also scheduled for Monday.
