Elmira captures CWOSSA AAA boys hockey title

FERGUS – The Elmira Lancers claimed the CWOSSA high school boys’ AAA hockey title Tuesday by edging the Resurrection Phoenix of Kitchener 4-3 in the gold-medal game of the championship tournament held at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex.

Austin Cousineau had a pair of goals for Elmira while Griffin Rollins and Lukas Shantz added single markers.

Resurrection received goals from Alvin Fardy, Connor Arnold and Ethan Januskiewicz.

Elmira gained its berth in the final with a 6-1 win over the Waterloo-Oxford Crusaders of Baden in the semifinals.

Cousineau had two goals in the game, too, while Kyle Kraemer, Griffen Hergott, Bart Sherrer and Keaton McLaughlin also scored.

Cole Stannix had the goal for Waterloo-Oxford.

Resurrection advanced to the final after defeating the District 4/10 champion Orangeville Scarlet Bears 4-2 in the semifinals.

Blake Stephenson, Kevin Gruber, Aidan Brady and Ethan Hepditch scored for Resurrection while Cole Teeple connected for both goals for Orangeville.

Elmira advances to the OFSAA provincial championship tournament at Barrie March 20 to 22.
