Elora Rocks force A quarter-final series to its limit

ELORA — The Elora Rocks forced a third and final game of their WOAA senior A men’s hockey playoff series with the Shelburne Muskies by scoring a 5-2 victory Saturday night at the Elora and District Community Centre.

The win tied the best-of-three A quarter-final series at a win apiece.

Shelburne scored the only goal of the first period before Elora netted three power-play goals to shoot ahead 3-1 by the end of the second period. After Shelburne cut the gap to a single goal early in the third, the Rocks tallied twice to complete the scoring.

Shelburne scored the only goal of the first period before the Rocks responded with five consecutive goals, the first three coming in the second on power plays. Shelburne completed the scoring in the game with 2:12 to go.

Danny Belletti scored twice for the Rocks while Brady Prosic had a goal and three assists and Spencer Cudney and Spencer Gourlay each had a goal and an assist. Andrew Whalen, Tristan Rae and Chad Herron each had one assist.

Luke Richardson and Eddie Gaffney scored for Shelburne with assists going to Ryan Elo, Travis Knight and Santino DiFlorio.

Shelburne outshot Elora 49-44. Gary Walser picked up the win in Elora’s net while Eddie Davie took the loss for Shelburne.

The Rocks went 3-for-9 on their power play while Shelburne was scoreless on seven power plays.

Third and deciding game of the series is set for Monday at 8:30 p.m. at the Centre Dufferin arena.

If the Rocks win the game, they’ll play the Huron East Centenaires in the best-of-seven semifinals. If Shelburne wins, the Muskies will play the Milverton 4-Wheel Drives in the semifinals.

The A playoffs are for teams that finished the regular season ninth through 14th. The Rocks were 14th and Shelburne 11th. Huron East finished ninth and Milverton 10th and they both had byes in the quarter-finals.
