Erin Mielzynski ninth in Semmering slalom

SEMMERING, Austria — Erin Mielzynski posted her best World Cup women’s slalom finish of the season Thursday when she was ninth at Semmering.

Mielzynski, a Bishop Macdonell high school graduate, had a two-run total time of one minute, 42.58 seconds.

Mikaela Shiffrin of the U.S. won at 1:40.06 while Veronika Velez Zuzulova of Slovakia was second at 1:40.70 and Wendy Holdener of Switzerland was third at 1:41.60.

Mielzynski, the top Canadian in the event, was 12th after the first run.

Marie-Michele Gagnon had been 14th after the first run, but didn’t finish the second run.

Mielzynski is 15th in the World Cup slalom standings with 56 points. Shiffrin leads at 400 while Velez Zuzulova is second at 290 and Holdener third at 260. Gagnon is 24th at 32.

Next women’s slalom on the World Cup circuit is set for Tuesday at Zagreb, Croatia.
