Falcons knocked out of OFSAA hoops tournament
WINDSOR – The Centre Wellington Falcons were ousted from the OFSAA provincial high school boys AAA basketball championship tournament Tuesday when they were edged 56-55 by the Upper Canada College Blues of Toronto in the consolation quarter-finals.
Cole Newton had 17 points for the Falcons while James Yeretsian had 16 for Upper Canada.
The District 10 and CWOSSA champion Falcons were placed in the consolation bracket when they were downed 79-54 by the Cathedral Gaels of Hamilton earlier Tuesday in the second round of the championship bracket.
Cole Newton hit for 19 points in that game while Nathan Bilamu had 23 for Cathedral.
The Falcons were seeded 12th for the 18-team tournament while Cathedral was seeded sixth and Upper Canada College 13th.
Centre Wellington was trying to become the first CWOSSA team to win the provincial AAA title since Cambridge Southwood won it in 2007 when there was a AAAA category for the province’s larger schools.
AAAA existed from 2002 until it was scrapped following the 2015 tournament and no CWOSSA team ever won the provincial crown in that class.
