Falcons secure home game in D10 senior volleyball playoffs
GUELPH – The Centre Wellington Falcons of Fergus assured themselves of a home date for the District 10 high schools senior boys’ volleyball league’s quarter-finals by sweeping the Lourdes Crusaders 3-0 Thursday.
“In the standings, we were ranked four and they were ranked five (coming into the game), so to maintain our spot this was an important game,” Centre Wellington coach Steve Beggs.
Centre Wellington held on to fourth with the win. The Spartans are at 7-5 with two matches left in the regular season and the Crusaders are fifth at 5-7, but would lose the tiebreaker with the Falcons as Centre Wellington won both regular-season matches between the squads.
The Falcons won 25-16, 25-20, 25-17 Thursday.
“We actually ended up having a fairly close one with Orangeville (eighth at 0-12) so we struggled a bit there,” Beggs said of the recent play of the Falcons with playoffs looming. “Maybe we were overconfident going in. We tend to rise up to the challenge.”
The league’s regular season is to wrap up next week with matches Tuesday and Thursday. The Falcons are to host the sixth-place Bishop Macdonell Celtics (4-8) Tuesday and play the seventh-place St. James Lions (3-9) at St. James Thursday.
“We’ve got to come up with another win in both of those ones,” Beggs said of getting ready for the playoffs that are to start Nov. 6. “We’ve just got to keep on passing up to our setter and get nice passes which is what we need every time.”
Championship night is set for Nov. 10 at Centennial.
