Falcons, Spartans skate to girls’ hockey deadlock

FERGUS – Ties are becoming almost commonplace in the District 10 high school girls’ hockey league this season.

Thursday, the Centre Wellington Falcons scored with just over a minute to play to secure a 2-2 tie with the Centennial Spartans at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex.

It was the seventh standoff in 22 league games this season. There were no ties at all in the league last season.

The teams scored once each in the first and third periods, the Spartans scoring first each time and the Falcons battling back to tie it up.

Cassie Tonin and Morgan Dezell had a goal each for Centennial, Dezell’s goal giving the Spartans the lead with 9:25 to go. Dezell, Milissa Roberts and Cate MacLeod collected assists.

Tianna Dietrich and Natalie Beilhartz responded for the Falcons, Beilhartz pulling Centre Wellington even with 1:10 to go. Assists were awarded to Kara den Hoed, Carson Lean and Allison Campbell.

Ross Royals lead the league at 4-1-2 and they’re a point ahead of Centre Wellington (3-0-3). The Spartans (2-1-3) are next and they’re followed by the Lourdes Crusaders (2-1-2), St. James Lions (2-2-2), Guelph CVI Green Gaels (2-4-1) and Bishop Macdonell Celtics (0-6-1).
