Fast start leads Storm to win over Flint
GUELPH – Three goals in the first period sparked the Guelph Storm to a 5-3 victory over the Flint Firebirds in Ontario Hockey League play Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.
The Storm tallied twice in the first seven minutes of the game and the teams traded goals the remainder of the way. Guelph led 3-1 at the end of the first period and 4-2 after the second.
Isaac Ratcliffe hit for a hat trick for the Storm while single goals were added by Alexey Toropchenko and Cedric Ralph. Cam Hillis assisted on three of the goals while Nate Schnarr had two assists and Dmitri Samorukov, Ratcliffe, Ryan Merkley, Zach Poirier and James McEwan had one each.
Connor Roberts scored twice for Flint while Jalen Smereck scored the other goal. Maurizio Colella and Ty Dellandrea each had two assists and Kyle Harris and Eric Uba had one apiece.
Flint outshot the Storm 39-38 and went 1-for-3 on the power play while the Storm went 2-for-3.
Anthony Popovich picked up the win in net for the Storm and Garrett Forrest was tagged with the loss for Flint.
The win lifted the Storm to 23-18-1-3, good for third in the Midwest Division with 50 points while Flint is fifth in the West Division at 13-28-3-1. The 50 points put the Storm one point ahead of the 49 they attained all of the 2016-17 season when they finished last in the Western Conference.
The game was the first of a three-in-three weekend for the Storm, who have 23 games to go in their regular season. They’re to play the Owen Sound Attack (19-19-2-5) at Owen Sound Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and the London Knights (26-17-2-2) at London Sunday at 2 p.m.
