Fergus Thistles take opener in overtime

ACTON – A pair of overtime goals by Jayden Bushy lifted the Fergus Thistles to a 13-11 victory over the Halton Hills Bulldogs in their Ontario junior C lacrosse league opener Wednesday night at the Acton Community Centre.

The Thistles had to rally for the win as they trailed 4-2 at the end of the first period and 8-7 after the second. However, both teams led during the game and neither was ahead by more than two goals.

An unassisted shorthanded goal by Austin Hoegy with 3:46 to go in regulation time forced the extra 10-minute period.

The Thistles went 3-for-5 on their power play while Halton Hills went 2-for-8.

Adam Lantz led Fergus with three goals and seven assists while Bushy had two goals and four assists. Dean Sealy also had a hat trick while Scott Stovel scored twice and single goals were added by Mitchell Burnier, Mitchell Daw and Austin Hoegy. Stovel, Daw and Eli Mcleod each had two assists while J.J. Swanston and Grae Fraser had one apiece.

Braidyn Vidler had three goals and three assists for Halton Hills while Adam Elinesky also scored three times. Tyler Morris had two goals and four assists while Steven Portelli had a goal and five assists. Liam McKay and Zac Tarr scored the other goals while Neil Mowat and Adrian Channell each had one assist.

Bill Wilson picked up the win in net for the Thistles while Jordan Rowsell took the loss.

Next game for the Thistles is their home opener as they’re to host the Brantford Warriors (0-1-0) Friday at 8 p.m. at the Elora and District Community Centre.
