Field hockey Gryphons to shoot for OUA gold
TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons are to play for gold Sunday at the OUA women’s field hockey championship tournament at York University.
The Gryphs scored twice in the first half Saturday to defeat the defending champion Toronto Varsity Blues 2-0 in the semifinals at York’s Alumni Field.
Olivia Finch hit for the eventual game-winner at 6:15 of the first half while Alexa Corrado added the other goal just less than 10 minutes later.
Morgan Kelley made five saves for the shutout.
Toronto pushed most of the game, outshooting the Gryphs 10-4.
The Gryphs are to play the host York Lions in the final Sunday at 3 p.m. York downed the Queen’s Gaels 4-0 in Saturday’s other semifinal.
York had finished the regular season in first place at 11-1-0 while the Gryphs were second at 8-1-3. The teams split their regular-season meetings with York winning 3-1 at Kingston Sept. 24 and the Gryphs winning 1-0 at home Oct. 11.
Winner of Sunday’s game advances to the best-of-three national championship against the Canada West champion at Thunderbird Park in Victoria, B.C., Nov. 3 to 5.
That’s new this year as U Sports has abandoned the tournament format as the OUA and Canada West are the only conferences that include field hockey.
The Gryphs will be out for their first OUA championship since 2013 and fifth overall while York will be after its first provincial title since 1996 and eighth overall.
