First playoff loss for Thistles, Brantford pulls even

BRANTFORD – The Fergus Thistles suffered their first setback of the Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League playoffs Saturday night when they were edged 7-5 by the Brantford Warriors at the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre.

The result evens the West Division final 1-1, effectively turning it into a best-of-three.

Fergus had swept its previous two series, beating the Halton Hills Bulldogs 2-0 in the West quarter-finals and Wilmot Wild 3-0 in the West semifinals.

Saturday, the Thistles squandered a three-goal lead as they were up 4-1 after the opening minute of the second period. Fergus led 5-3 at the end of that period, but the host Warriors scored four unanswered goals in the third period for the win, the final two goals coming 19 seconds apart with less than eight minutes to go.

Brett Harrison had a hat trick for Fergus while Mitchell Bernier and Bo Columbus also scored. Adam Lantz assisted on three of the goals while Dean Sealey had two assists and Mitchell Daw and Curtis Hall had one apiece.

Caleb Wells had two goals and two assists for Brantford, all coming in the third period. Ty Argent also had a pair of goals while Hunter Aggus, Jayden Drage and Cole Robillard scored once each. Robillard also had two assists while Michael Comeau, Ryan Dorr and Connor Merritt had one each.

Lucas Nagy picked up the win in net for Brantford while Bill Wilson was tagged with the loss for Fergus.

Third game of the series is set for Monday at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex. Game time is 8 p.m.

The defending champion Clarington Shamrox opened the East final Saturday with a 9-8 win in overtime over the Peterborough Lakers.

Second game of that series is scheduled for Sunday night at Peterborough.
