Football Gryphs win three at Summer Showdown
ANTIGONISH, N.S. – The Guelph Gryphons completed the U Sports preseason football Summer Showdown with the Mount Allison Mounties and St. Francis Xavier X-Men with three wins and a loss Saturday at StFX’s Oland Stadium.
Each game was 15 minutes long, the length of a normal quarter in the regular season, and each team played each other twice.
The Gryphs outscored their opponents 62-13 as they defeated StFX 15-3 and 17-0 and Mount Allison 30-0 and lost 10-0 to the Mounties.
Mount Allison also finished at 3-1 while StFX was 0-4. The Mounties defeated the X-Men 20-2 and 10-3. Mount Allison outscored its opponents 40-35 while StFX was outscored 62-8.
In the 15-3 win over StFX, Luke Korol scored a touchdown on a 36-yard return of a fumble recovery, Jordan Terrio caught a 16-yard TD toss from quarterback James Roberts, Gabe Ferraro converted one of the TDs (the other was a two-point attempt that went for naught) and the Gryphs had a safety. StFX’s points came on a 20-yard field goal.
In the 30-0 victory over Mount Allison, Johnny Augustine scored on a one-yard run, Jamal Hooker scored on a 21-yard run and Terrio caught a 10-yard TD pass from Theo Landers. Ferraro had the other points as he kicked field goals of 31, 51 and 57 yards, the 50+ ones coming in the final 17 seconds, and he also had three converts.
In the 17-0 win over StFX, Hooker had another TD on an eight-yard run and Terrio caught his third TD pass of the game, this one a 10-yard toss from Landers. Chris MacLean kicked a 35-yard field goal and two converts.
In the 10-0 loss to Mount Allison, the Mounties scored a safety, a TD on a run of one yard on a third-and-goal play and a rouge on the following kickoff.
All three teams are to start their regular seasons next weekend. The Gryphs are to host the Ottawa Gee-Gees Sunday at 1 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
