Force puts brakes on inaugural season
FERGUS – The Fergus Force are pulling the plug on their inaugural season in the Greater Metro Junior A Hockey League.
The Force announced Wednesday that it would take a leave of absence for the remainder of the 2017-18 season.
“It is with a great deal of sadness that the team has informed the GMHL and the Township of Centre Wellington that we have ceased operations for the balance of the 2017-2018 season,” the Force announced on its website.
“A combination of several factors has put us in the unenviable position of not being able to fulfill our commitments, and a decision we could not continue under present circumstances.
“All players are deemed free agents for the balance of this season, and may be contacted by any of our teams, and we are also working to help them find other teams to play for to complete their season.
“We are also seeking a new ownership arrangement to return next season.
“We would like to extend our gratitude to Centre Wellington, the great folks at the arena, and the good people of Fergus and Elora, and our amazing staff who gave so much of themselves to contribute to our program.
“Hope to see you again soon!”
The Force becomes the third team to pull out of the league this season, following the Parry Sound Islanders who withdrew before regular-season play began and the Wiarton Schooners who withdrew last month. All three are in the league’s North Division.
The Force had a 1-16-0-0 record, the win being by default over Wiarton after the Schooners folded.
Fergus was outscored 149-35 and yielded double digits in goals in eight of the 16 games they played and had 14 players dressed for their Sept. 17 season opener.
The Force withdrew just as they were scheduled to play four road games in four days as they were to have played at Meaford Thursday, Temiscaming, Que., Friday, Ville-Marie, Que., Saturday and Bradford Sunday.
