Gabe Ferraro OUA special teams player of week

GUELPH – Kicker/punter Gabe Ferraro of the Guelph Gryphons has been named the OUA football league’s special teams player of the week.

Ferraro, the national single-season field goal record holder, kicked four field goals and three converts in Guelph’s 33-18 win over the York Lions on Labour Day Monday at Alumni Stadium.

Ferraro is the leading career scorer among active players in national university football. His 15 points again York leave him 15th with 330 career points, a Gryphon high. Johnny Mark of Calgary scored 535 points in his five years that wrapped up in 2015 while Lirim Hajrullahu who collected 422 for the Western Mustangs from 2009 to 2013 is second nationally and first in the OUA in career points.

With the four field goals against York, Ferraro lifts his career total to 75. That leaves him tied for sixth in U Sports history with Matthew Falvo who kicked for the Ottawa Gee-Gees from 2008 to 2012. Mark kicked 91 in his career while Lewis Ward, who wrapped up five seasons with Ottawa last year, had an OUA best 89.

Ferraro kicked the U Sports all-time single-season best of 33 last year.

Ottawa fifth-year slotback/running back Bryce Vieira who had 198 total yards (106 receiving and 92 rushing) and the game-winning TD in an 18-11 victory over the McMaster Marauders to be named the offensive player of the week.

Cornerback Jamie Harry of the Gee-Gees was the defensive player of the week after he had eight tackles, an interception, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup.

The Gryphons and Gee-Gees are to clash Saturday at 1 p.m. at Ottawa’s Gee-Gees Field.
