Gaels begin senior rugby campaign with two wins

GUELPH – The Guelph CVI Green Gaels are aiming to go from worst to first in District 10 high school senior boys’ rugby.

After the opening mini-tournament of the regular season, the Gaels have more wins this year than they had last year.

Friday at Varsity Field, the Gaels defeated the Centennial Spartans 37-7 and the Centre Wellington Falcons 39-0.

Last year the Gaels lost all six of their regular-season games.

Josh Tran had two tries in the win over Centennial while Sam Steinhauser, Ben James, Jimmy Ngo, Donny Smart and Simon Chaves each scored one try. Spencer Bond added two converts.

Wyatt Shantz had a try for Centennial while Cam Clark converted it.

Chaves, James, Trevor Keough, Smart, Owen Stirling and Tran scored tries against Centre Wellington while Bond kicked converts.


Centre Wellington 10 Erin 0

Griffin Ireland and Mateo Pommier each had a try for Centre Wellington.


Ross 49 Centennial 0

Thomas Blarney, Quintin Kleppe, Jon Howie, Tyler Dunk and Liam Weir each scored a try for Ross while Jordan Bauer added a converts. Other scorers were not available.


Centre Dufferin 26 Erin 17

Troy Henderson had two tries for Centre Dufferin in their return to the league while Caleb Jonker had three converts and Brandon Anthony and John Thomas each added a try.

Danny Webber, Justin McLaughlin and Jordan Javornich each scored a try for defending champions Erin. Webber also had a convert.


Ross 55 Centre Dufferin 0

Sam Gunamuni and Howie each scored two tries for Ross while Bauer had three converts. Getting one try apiece were Kleppe, Carter Macpherson, Seamus Harvey, Maxamillion Kobatich and Chris Kelterborn while Will Helyar had two converts.
