Gargoyles clobber Central Blues in opener

GUELPH – The Grand River Gargoyles opened their AFL Ontario Australian football season with a 97-7 drubbing of the Central Blues Saturday at Margaret Greene Park.

The Gargs kept the Blues scoreless after the first quarter. Grand River led 23-7 at the end of the opening quarter, 69-7 at halftime and 97-7 at the end of the third quarter.

Nathan Millar led the Gargs with four goals while Tyler Schwartzentruber had three, Dave Maurer two and Brian Correia, Aiden Mcqoid, Jeremy Schwartzentruber, Aidan Simpson and David Thompson had one each.

Tim Trembath scored the goal for the Blues.

The Gargs are to host the defending champion Toronto Eagles Saturday at noon at Margaret Greene Park. The Eagles defeated the Toronto Rebels 50-38 as last year’s grand final match combatants met to open their seasons.
