Gargoyles dropped by defending champion Eagles

GUELPH – The Grand River Gargoyles were handed a 76-30 setback by the Toronto Eagles in Australian Football League Ontario play Saturday at Margaret Greene Park.

While the defending champion Eagles led throughout, the match was closer than the score indicated.

The Eagles were up 17-0 at the end of the first quarter, 47-15 at halftime and 60-22 after the third quarter.

Nathan Millar and Sam Wood kicked goals for the Gargs.

David Starr, Jay Himat and Aaron Falcioni kicked three goals apiece for the Eagles while single goals were added by Steven Page and Kevin Minaker.

The Eagles have won both games they’ve played this season and they’re third in the nine-team league. The loss leaves the Gargs at 1-1-0 and in fourth place.

In AFL Ontario, points-for-and-against percentage is used to break ties in the standings.

The Gargs have the bye this weekend and are to host the Toronto Rebels (0-1-0) June 16 at 12 p.m. at Margaret Greene Park.
